(she/her) is interested in meeting places, physical spaces and situations that are collectively negotiated, designed and used by different people. As an artist and designer, she conceives, builds, programs, curates and maintains these spaces as part of international participatory and site-specific projects.
Since 2018, as a part of ‘PARKS’, she has been developing a new form of public green space, between park, art venue, neighborhood meeting point and much more. As part of ‘PARKS’, she was involved in other projects such as the collaborative sculpture park ‘touch, don’t touch’ and the international symposium on urban curating ‘Alles ist schon da’. Together with other artists, she designed the floating commons ‘Archipel’ and was invited to international art residencies at the Goethe Institute, among others.
As a freelance artist for many years, she worked with the Stadtkurator*in Hamburg and with groups such as ‘geheimagentur’ and ‘ZOLLO’ on the projects ‘Hamburger Seefrauenparade’ and ‘There is no satisfaction’, among others. As part of the six-month art residency ‘Auf weit Flur’, she is developing the ‘Neue Wirtschaft – offene Gemeinschaftsküche Augustusburg’ as a collective and self-sustaining space in the rural area around Chemnitz.
Tohermes’ practice is based on a sensitive analysis of the situation, on conversations and interviews, on “productive hanging out” in one place and on actively inviting those involved, affected or passabys. She supports the self-organization of the people who use the space and sets up systems to facilitate access for potential users.
Nuriye Tohermes has completed training as a process facilitator alongside her artistic studies and craft practice.
